(6). Li Hyson and Ma Chi-lung's opium case. When the market went up these two men transferred to themselves all the chests of opium bought by their company, of which the former was the Secretary and the latter one of the directors. Slips of paper were cut out of register books and filled in as promissory notes and agreement to back up the transfer. The case is still pending and the clerk who is conducting it on their behalf is Leung Wing Cheung, who is also acting on behalf of Ho Ngok Lau in the case, in which Ho's younger brother's widow has sued for an account and power to administer her husband's share of the estate.

(7). Absconding debtors. To Weichow men named Tin Put Hing and another before they absconded transferred their property in Shau Ki Wan and Mongkok to Un Km Wa at his suggestion in such a way as to shew that the property had been sold to him on the understanding that when they come back after the storm it would be returned to them. When they did come back and asked for the return of their property Un refused, thus defrauding both credit- -ors and debtors.

(8). Impersonation and Periury. An action was brought by a derttim creditor against a man named Tang and the writ was served on some one in the Ko Shing Theatre impersonating Tong by Un Kan Wa who alleged that he and served it on Tang personally. Judgment was obtained against Tang by default of non-appearance. Afterwards Tang succeeded in getting the judgment set aside on proving to the satisfaction of the Court that he had never been to the Ko Shing Theatre, nor had he been served with the writ at all. Un Kam Wa was, thereupon charged with perjury and committed for trial. Somehow or other the prosecution was dropped.

At the same time, we should like to point out that it is a common practice amongst Solicitors' clerks to train their clients like parrots to meet cross examinations and cook their evidence before it is given in Court. In almost every case, during the hearing of it, the clerk through whom the brief was

obtained is present in Court to watch the manner in which the

client answers questions and to point out to his employer anything
